Here are my answers:

1. An elusive ancestor I found -- Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the parents of Rev. Alvah Russel Rutan but I am hoping that 2015 will bring some great clues on where to look so I can find out who they are.

2. A precious family photo I found was of my Great grandparents. I love this photo of them! On the back are their names in her handwriting!! There is no date either. I think this was taken at their house in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania.

3. An ancestor's grave I found was -- No cemetery exploring for me in 2014 but I will be back out there as soon as it gets nice out again! Unless you count the ones I have been able to find on Findagrave. I have been lucky enough, recently, to have come across a lot of my Houseknecht's headstones on Findagrave along with some new family members that I have been able to add to my tree. (Thank you to all the Findagrave volunteers...without you I would not have found some of my ancestors!!)

4. An important vital record I found was my great grandfather and great grandmother's death certificates.

5. My 2014 blog post that I was particularly proud of was about processing How I process death certificates.

6. My 2014 blog post that received a large number of hits or comments was Tagging in Legacy

7. A social media tool I enjoyed using for genealogy was IFTTT. I have it set up Recipes so that when I post a new blog post it automatically goes to Google+, Facebook, and Twitter.

8. A genealogy conference/seminar/webinar from which I learnt something new was Monday's with Myrt. I always learn something new when I watch.

9. I am proud of the presentation I gave at the Legacy Users Group on Google+. I was lucky enough to participate a few times in our Hangouts.

10. I taught a friend how to use Evernote for doing Genealogy.

11. A new genealogy/history book I enjoyed was The Fishing Creek Confederacy A Story of Civil War Draft Resistence by Richard A. Sauers and Peter Tomasak. Alvah Rutan is mentioned in the book because he was arrested during the Fishing Creek Confederacy for speaking out against the President. There is not a whole lot of information about Alvah in the book but it tells a great story.

12. Another positive I would like to share is that I posted 31 blog posts in 2014 and I could not be happier! I have been helping people with Legacy and Evernote and I get a great amount of joy helping others!

Marine Casualty Card Database

While I was writing Top 10 Blog Posts for 2019 I discovered that my top post was US Marine Casualty Cards from 2014. Wow! {There is also an update to the original post here where I show some more information that was sent to me.} I went back to read the post and discovered that the links no longer work. I did a little digging and found a link to the Casualty Card Database at the Marine Corps University website. At this site you click on the war you want to search and download a searchable spreadsheet. Once you locate your Marine you send an email to request the card. There are also links to download information about what the codes mean on the cards. I also found that you can search the U.S. Marine Corps Casualty Index, 1940-1958 , at Ancestry.com. Evernote to OneNote | Importing Notes

A few weeks ago I posted about moving to OneNote from Evernote . To start the process I searched for a way export my Evernote notes into OneNote. At the OneNote website you can download a OneNote importer. Once it is downloaded double click to open and follow the instructions to link your Evernote account. {Save the importer because you will be using it a lot to import your notes} . I do not suggest selecting all of your notebooks and doing them at one time, especially if you have a lot of notes. Before I started the importer I did a little housekeeping in my Evernote notebooks and deleted notes that were not needed. You can also create some dummy notebooks in Evernote to break up your notes into smaller chunks so you do not run into any issues when importing to OneNote. How I Process Death Certificates Using Evernote Reminders

Today while I was at work I received a notice on my phone that I had an Evernote reminder for today. I was excited because I knew when I got a chance to do some genealogy today that I would be following up on this reminder instead of sitting at my computer trying to figure out what I needed to work on. First I created a Pennsylvania death certificate search list from my Legacy database and saved it as a pdf. When I have some time I go through my list and look for the death certs on ancestry.com When I find the death certificate I save it to my computer and then process it. I saved Christianna Daum's death certificate as 6769 -- Christianna Elizabeth Cadwallader Daum in my Cadwallader surname file on my computer. [Christianna is my 4th great grandmother].
