I have some alerts set up on Ebay to let me know when anything is posted with some of my surnames and even some places.  One of the alerts I get is anything Siegfried related.  About a month ago I was alerted to a picture of a woman and on the back of the picture is written Emma Siegfried {I'm pretty sure it says Mrs Emma Siegfried} and of course I bought the photo .   The other thing I noticed on the back of the photo was the photographer's name and that it says Reading PA.   {I know some of the Siegfried's come from that area}. I looked in my Legacy database to see if I have an Emma Siegfried . . . and I do!  One is my great aunt born in 1926 {the photo is not of her} and the other is Emma Lydia Shellhammer Siegfried born in 1862 {I don't think it is of her but it could be}. William Andrew Siegfreid is my 2nd great grandfather.  He is the son of William Henry and Eve Greenzwig Siegfried. William was born 21 October 1857 in Millport, Lower Towamensing Township, Carbon county, Pennsylvania and he died on 16 February 1927 in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania. This is my great grandfather, Harold Seigfreid. Harold was born in Shickshinny, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA on 5 May 1918 to Alonzo Elwood and Edna Mae Gensel Seigfreid. On the 1920 census Harold is living with his parents and he is 1 year 5 months old.  They live in Foundryville, Briar Creek Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, USA. On the 1930 census Harold is living in Philipstown, Putnam, New York, USA with is parents and he is 11 years old.  Also living in the household are his brothers Walter and William Seigfreid and his Aunt (his mother's sister) Myrtle Gensel Meeker with her husband Owen and daughter Mary. In 1932 Harold leaves school; he is only 14 years of age. In 1934 Harold started working in the mines.  He worked at the Stackhouse Coal Company in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania from 1934 to 1937; the Glen Alden Coal Company in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania from 1937 to 1941; the Salem Collieries in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania from 1945 to 1948. ...

Elizabeth Jane Savage is my husband's 3rd great grandmother.  She was born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania on 1 May 1821 to Henry and Elizabeth (Frantz) Savage.   Elizabeth married Joseph Thomas (#2 of 52) on 19 June 1854 and they had the following children: Daniel W. Thomas John W. Thomas Joshua Eugene Thomas Parvin Oscar Thomas Ella G. Thomas William James Thomas Anna E. Thomas When Joseph was killed in April of 1865 in the Civil War Elizabeth continued to take care of their children.  She did not remarry.  She remained in Fishing Creek Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania where I found them in the 1860 Census.  From the List of Pensioners I found that in 1883 Elizabeth was getting $8.00 a month to care for her family.  Elizabeth died in April of 1890 and she is buried in Dodson Cemetery in Huntington Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania with other members of her husbands family. Edward C. Lewis 1824 - 1891   Edward Lewis is my 3rd great grandfather; he is the father of  Florence M. Lewis Myers Hunter  that I wrote about last week.  When I was trying to figure out who I wanted to write about this week I was working on some research on ancestry and came across the above picture posted by a "cousin."  I don't know anything about the picture..I wish I did!   Edward was born 1 October 1824 in Sussex County, New Jersey to unknown parents, at least to me at this time.  From census records I have been able to tell that he spent his married life in Union Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Some next steps in my research on Edward are: Who are Edward's parents? When did they move to Pennsylvania? Why did they move to Pennsylvania? Edward was a farmer and it looks like he owned land so I want to look for that as well. Edward married Ellen (aka Eleanor) Bonham on 27 March 1842, at least according a cousin....

I've had a really hard time deciding who to write about for this week.  I do not have a lot of information about Florence but since I wrote about her husband George Washington Hunter last week I thought why not continue the story…or lack thereof. Florence was born 5 Sep 1863 in Muhlenburg, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA to Edward C. and Ellen (Elenore) Bonham Lewis.  Florence was the oldest of three children; Boaz Lewis was born about 1870 and Clemmence Lewis was born about 1872 [I have not done any research on her siblings yet]. I have not found the family on the 1870 census yet but I am expecting to find them in Luzerne County.  In 1880 the family was living in Union Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA.  In 1883 she married her first husband, Orel Kizer Myers.  The 1900 census has them living in Hunlock Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA. Joseph is my husband's 3rd great-grandfather.   Joseph was born in 1830 probably in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and he died 3 Apr 1865 in Hopewell, Prince George County, Virginia from wounds received during the Civil War. Joseph married Elizabeth Jane Savage (I blogged about Elizabeth's burial search before) 19 June 1854 in Fishing Creek Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.  Joseph and Elizabeth had 7 children: Daniel W.
