Tagging in Legacy

Tagging in Legacy helps me keep track of projects and direct line ancestors. There are advanced tagging options for individuals and marriages.

In the image above on Joseph Thomas you can see that he is tagged on #1, #4 and #9 and in the marriage section there are not tags.

The image below shows what the advanced tagging window looks like. If you right click on the tags (see above image) the Advanced Tagging window will open.

In the image to the left, is a close up view of the Advanced Tagging window. #1 is the individual person whose tags you right clicked on to open the Advanced Tagging window. Clicking on change will bring up another window where you can choose a different person. #2 shows what tags are active for the individual. If you click on a tag number you can make that tag active for the individual. #3 is where you can make changes to other peoples tags without going to each individual person. #4 is where you put the tag descriptions. Make sure you don't skip this step so you know why you have people tagged on certain numbers. #5 lets you choose three tags that will show up in lists (when you create a search list the three tags will show up in your list of people). In the image above you can see that Joseph Thomas is tagged on 1, 4 and 9. Tag #1 means he is in my husband's direct line, #4 tells me that I need to add a Find A Grave event, and #9 tells me that something needs to be done...in this case there are to dos that need to be taken care of so I can fill in some Events.

My tags change often as I work on projects. Right now I am trying to figure out what Rutan's belong to my Alvah Rutan so they are all unlinked from my tree in Legacy and tagged on #8 so I can find them quickly. I have also been trying to clean up some messes in my database so I tagged everyone in my database on #9 and when I come across people tagged on #9 I will figure out what needs to be done and delete the tag once it has been taken care of; there are a few that don't need anything done so I just delete the tag. I also use tagging when I am creating search lists to help narrow down my people even more.

Marine Casualty Card Database

While I was writing Top 10 Blog Posts for 2019 I discovered that my top post was US Marine Casualty Cards from 2014. Wow! {There is also an update to the original post here where I show some more information that was sent to me.} I went back to read the post and discovered that the links no longer work. I did a little digging and found a link to the Casualty Card Database at the Marine Corps University website. At this site you click on the war you want to search and download a searchable spreadsheet. Once you locate your Marine you send an email to request the card. There are also links to download information about what the codes mean on the cards. I also found that you can search the U.S. Marine Corps Casualty Index, 1940-1958 , at Ancestry.com. It gives the casualty date, type, unit, and service number. There is a link to go to another website from the Ancestry database but that link does not work. {I believe it is the same as the link from my original post

Tagging and Notebooks in Evernote

With the Genealogy Do Over going full force there has been a lot of Evernote questions popping up and most have to do with tagging and notebooks so today I am going to share how my notebooks and tags are set up. Notebooks shown in blue box and tags are shown in green box. Inbox Stack : The Inbox notebook which is my default notebook is where everything goes before it gets tagged and moved to the correct notebook. The To Do notebook holds all to do's both genealogy and personal and they all get assigned a reminder. Once the task is complete they are moved to the appropriate notebook with correct tags added. The Blog notebook is a temporary notebook that holds information and ideas for blog posts. Once I don't need the information any more it is either deleted or moved to the appropriate notebook. George Washington Hunter

There is a lot I don't know but here is what I know about my 2nd great-grandfather. George Washington Hunter is the son of William Wallace and Priscilla Cragle Hunter. George was born in 1854 and died in 1927 George married Mary McMelon abt 1880 and they had Jonah, Sarah, Iva Pearl, and Theron. Mary died in 1903 and in Jan 1904 he married my 2nd great-grandmother Florence M. Lewis Myers. Together, George and Florence had my great-grandfather Willard Milton Hunter. In 1870 George was 16 years old and he was a farm laborer according to the 1870 census; he was living in Union, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania with his parents. In 1880 George was 26 years old and he was married to Mary (she was only 17 years old). George's occupation is a teamster and they are living in Hunlock Township. Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
