Satuday Night Genealogy Fun -- What's Your Ancestor Score??

My ancestor score is only 12.9!  What?!? When I first saw my numbers in the table below I was like what the heck...why is it that low.  I redid my numbers to make sure everything was right and then it hit me.  This only represents my side not my husbands{which I have done way more work on by the way} and I have only been doing this genealogy thing for 2 years! In Legacy Family Tree I ran an Ancestor report starting with myself and then counted each generation and then added my information to a table in Excel.  At some point I am going to do one for my husbands side and see where I stand with his side.  Right now I think this will be an interesting topic to come back to in 6 months or even a year from now to see how I have progressed. Saturday Night Genealogy fun came from  Gena-Musings .  You can go to Randy's blog to see his numbers too. Your mission, should you decide to accept it (and I hope more of you do than participated...

75 Years ago H. Seigfreid married H. Killian

On November 27, 1938 (75 years ago today) Harold E. Seigfreid married Hazel Alice Killian.   Harold was born on May 5, 1918 in Shickshinny, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and he died on 30 Jul 1995 in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Hazel was born on January 30, 1918 in Salem Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and she died January 12, 1993 in Shickshinny Valley, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Hazel and Harold are buried next to each other in the Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Together, they raised two boys Byron and Howard.  They were blessed with grandchildren and many great grandchildren who were the highlight of their lives.  They were the kindest, most generous people that I have ever known.   It seems like just yesterday they were both here and we were sitting at the kitchen table eating supper together; those are some of my most memorable moments. Happy Anniversary Ba...

11 September 1911

Seigfreid is one of the surnames that I have been researching; it is my maiden name.  I have always known that the "ei" is sometimes "ie" but I didn't know about all of the Siegfried history in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Northampton in Northampton County use to be Siegfried at one time because of the Siegfried family that settled there. In the last month I have found a lot of information about the Siegfried family thanks to some new friends I have met along the way. One of the most helpful has been Leon Borst.  Through him I have found a Siegfried cemetery, Siegfried's Dale, and Siegfried.  The more I research the more interested...ok infatuated with Siegfried. In a recent search I found the above post card on Ebay and snatched it up immediately {I just found another one tonight and now it is also mine}.  Under the image of the back of the postcard I have transcribed what the sender wrote.  The stamp on the back of the postcard says Sieg...

How I Use Evernote for My Genealogy.

NOTE: 2 Feb 2014 -- Link updated to shared notebook ______________________________________________________________________ Today I did a Google+ hangout on air about  Evernote for Genealogy .   Once I watched the video I saw that I was not a very good cameraman! Hopefully this will clear up any questions you may have. How I use Evernote for my genealogy. I use Evernote to store everything including my genealogy research. You want to use Evernote in a way that makes sense to you.  Tags, notebooks, no tags or no notebooks; do whatever works the best for you. Notebooks  (the  blue  box) Notebooks are sorted alphabetically so if there are notebooks you want at the top of your list you can use ! or @ or ~ in front of your notebook title.  In my image, for example, I have my INBOX notebook with an ! in front to keep this notebook at the top of the list.  I use a ~ to keep my GENEALOGY notebook stacks together. ...

Signatures From Long Ago

I was on Family Search  browsing the Pennsylvania County Marriages, 1885 - 1950 images looking for a marriage license or record for Daisy Pauline Gensel and imagine my surprise when I found my great grandparents on there.  Harold and Hazel (Killian) Seigfreid married 27 Nov 1938.  I was going to look for it but I just had not gotten to it.  The best part is that both of my great grandparent's signatures are on the marriage license application! My great grandmother's father, Byron Killian, also signed it as well as my great grandfather's mother, Edna (Gensel) Killian. I cannot wait to see what other treasures I can find!

More family matches!

I have a My Heritage site for my genealogy.  At first I did not like it but I think it was because I didn't understand much about it.  I had been getting some smart matches off and on but not on a consistent basis until today when I went and looked at my site.  I have over 2300 smart matches to confirm and there are a ton of record matches as well!!  I am thinking that it just too some time for My Heritage to search for my matches.  Now I'm wondering if a data package would be worthwhile??  I already have ancestry.com, Genealogybank.com, and fold3.com.  Do I really need a data package for My Heritage??  Is the information any different?? I am, however, very excited about the new connections I am making!! You can view my My Heritage site at  http://www.myheritage.com/site-199052461/thomas-seigfreid . You can see my ancestry.com family tree at  http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/48698875/family?cfpid=20145262727&selnode=1 You can a...

Cemetery Hopping!

It is now warm enough here in PA to go and check out a few cemeteries! I'm hopeful that one particular headstone will help with some conflicting dates.  It looks like I am going to journey to Oakdale Cemetery in Hunlock Creek in Luzerne County, PA. There is a major discrepancy with the birth year and death year for Florence Lewis Myers Hunter.  She was first married to Orel Myers and then George Washington Hunter.  Florence and Orel had at least 7 children and Florence and George Washington Hunter had one son, Willard Milton Hunter (my great-grandfather).  Florence is buried with Orel and not George...I wonder why??  More mysteries to solve!  Stay tuned to see what I find.
