Finally Get Oranized : January Update

January 10th – 16th

Data backup :
  1. Genealogy Files -- are saved in One Drive [I got a lot of free space when I got my new computer].
  2. screenshot_23
From my Evernote Database.  Right click on Notes and choose export.  Make sure you click on the Options button to choose what is included.
  3. Evernote – notes are exported as web pages every few months [I have an Evernote Reminder set for this] and they are saved in One Drive.
  4. Photos – are saved to my computer and then automatically backed up to Flickr and Google Photos.
  5. screenshot_22
The backup options in Legacy Family Tree.  This window open every time I close my database.  I just click on backup because my backup location is already in there.
  6. Legacy Family Tree – backs up automatically every time I close it; both media files and my database are backed up.
  7. Crash Plan – Everything is backed up with Crash Plan and saved to the cloud for easy retrieval if needed.  I review my backup every now and then to make sure all of my files are being backed up [also an Evernote Reminder].
Genealogy Management Program :
  • I use Legacy Family Tree.  When I first started doing genealogy I used Family Tree Maker but it did not play nice with my computer.
  • Whatever program you use you should take the time to really learn what the program does.
Older Generations :
  • Still working on getting what I need for these but I am getting close .
Binders :
  • I skipped the binders because I am trying to have as much of genealogy on my computer as I can.
What Happens to My Genealogy :
  • I do need to write my introduction file to place with my files.  In the meantime my husband knows what to do with all of my genealogy stuff if no one in the family wants it.

January 17th – 23rd

Transcribing Documents :
  • I have not had a lot of genealogy time this week…bummer!!!
  • I try to transcribe any document that I find as soon as I have it.  In Legacy, I create an event and transcribe the document in the Event notes and attach the document image to the event.

This is the Event screen in Legacy Family Tree where the document is transcribed in the notes and then the document is attached to the event.

January 24th – 31st

Family Search :
  • I love Family Search!!  I try to put time aside each month to either transcribe or arbitrate.  It is relaxing to me!
  • I have found a lot of great information in the non indexed images at Family Search.
Siblings :
  • I only have 1 sister and her and her family are documented in my database.

January Conclusion :

I did not get as much Genealogy time this month as I would have liked! [who really does].  While I try to transcribe documents as soon as I get them that does not always happen and I do have a backlog of documents to be scanned, transcribed, and attached in Legacy.

When I first started out I did use binders for holding documents but soon realized that I was more a digital genealogist than a paper genealogist.  It has taken some time to come up with a system that makes sense and works for me without having to think about it.  Currently, the only paper files I plan to keep are original documents or things that are important to me [like military records].

My back up process was set up a long time ago so I took some time this month to verify everything was being backed up correctly.

I’m happy with what I was able to accomplish this month and look forward to what is to come!

How I Use Evernote for My Genealogy.

NOTE: 2 Feb 2014 -- Link updated to shared notebook ______________________________________________________________________ Today I did a Google+ hangout on air about  Evernote for Genealogy .   Once I watched the video I saw that I was not a very good cameraman! Hopefully this will clear up any questions you may have. How I use Evernote for my genealogy. I use Evernote to store everything including my genealogy research. You want to use Evernote in a way that makes sense to you.  Tags, notebooks, no tags or no notebooks; do whatever works the best for you. Notebooks  (the  blue  box) Notebooks are sorted alphabetically so if there are notebooks you want at the top of your list you can use ! or @ or ~ in front of your notebook title.  In my image, for example, I have my INBOX notebook with an ! in front to keep this notebook at the top of the list.  I use a ~ to keep my GENEALOGY notebook stacks together.  I have an ARCHIVE notebook and in front of

Stitching Update…Lots of pics

LHN Family Sampler (excuse my crooked house…not sure why it looks like that) American Flag Quilt Sampler by Rosewood Manor.  I love stitching on this; I did however run out of the Brethren Blue.  I decided to put this down for a little while and have picked up the family sampler again. A close up! HAED Natures Mourning.  I have not worked on this in a while.  I plan to stitch on LHN Family Sampler until Friday and then work on this next. Last but not least is a little freebie that I did before Christmas.
