O is for Obituary

Obituaries hold a lot of great information in them.

I have an Obituary Event/Fact in Legacy.  I record the information from the newspaper and transcribe the obituary in the event.

Here is the transcription of the obituary from the Benton Argus on 13 Jan 1927:

Death of Miss Hannah Rutan

Miss Hannah Rutan died at the home of her nephew, Mr. Ward Vandine, in Bloomsburg on Friday evening at 8 o'clock after an illness of one week.  She was first attacked by a heavy cold but it is thought she sustained a stroke of paralysis on Thursday night that was the direct cause of her death.
She was 80 years of age last October and was a godly woman; more than 60 years of her life she has been a Sunday School Teacher and worker in the the church.  She was a member of the Christian church.  For several years past she was the teacher of the Mother's Bible Class of the Bloomsburg Church of Christ.
Miss Rutan spent many years of her life as a resident of this Borough being employed in the old shirt factory and making her home with Misses Mary and Ela Apleman; the former now deceased.
The deceased is survived by two sisters, Mrs W. R. Lemons of near town and Mrs David Wenner of Fishingcreek Township.  Also a number of nephews and nieces.
The funeral services were conducted Vandine home a 2 oclock, where short Tuesday afternoon meeting at the services were held.  The services proper were held in the Stillwater Christian Church.  Revs E C V Huffer, assisted by Rev L M Sparks officiated.  Interment was made in the Stillwater cemetery.
Revs. L M Sparks and E C V Huffer officated.  Two hymns "Asleep in Jesus" and "Abide With Me" were read.  The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful.
Acting as pall bearers were Enos A. Hartman, Alva Hartman, Joseph Hartman, Hanford Hartman, David Hartman, and Ward Van Dine, all nephews.

Make sure you are looking in newspapers for obituaries and other articles regarding your ancestors.

See you tomorrow for letter P.

Stitching Update…Lots of pics

LHN Family Sampler (excuse my crooked house…not sure why it looks like that) American Flag Quilt Sampler by Rosewood Manor.  I love stitching on this; I did however run out of the Brethren Blue.  I decided to put this down for a little while and have picked up the family sampler again. A close up! HAED Natures Mourning.  I have not worked on this in a while.  I plan to stitch on LHN Family Sampler until Friday and then work on this next. Last but not least is a little freebie that I did before Christmas.
