Evernote and Genealogy

In July of 2013 I did a post about Evernote called How I Use Evernote for My Genealogy.  Since then some things have changed.

At one point I moved to OneNote.  Why?  I'm not quite sure.  It may have thought that it was maybe better than Evernote but in the end Evernote won and I switched back.  For me Evernote has better searching capabilities and I am all about making things easier.  I think I also spent too much time making things pretty in OneNote.

I reorganized my genealogy stuff in Evernote and changed names of notes to have everything fit better for me and I am LOVING how much easier it is to find things.  I still need to make better use of my tags so that is the next step in my Evernote redo.


Notebooks and stacks were rearranged, some deleted some new, to better organize my notes.


Notes were renamed in a way that made better sense and put my notes in alphabetical order.

The Great Genealogy Shape Up of 2018!

For most of 2017, I spent my genealogy time cleaning up my database in Legacy Family Tree.  I'm still working on cleaning up messes from when I first started my family tree.  For 2018, I plan to continue cleaning up my database.  I would also like to finish adding all Find A Grave information to my database as well.   Find A Grave is a great place to find leads to research.  Legacy makes it very easy to find everyone in your database who do not have Find A Grave memorials.   Click the drop-down arrow on the Find A Grave icon and it gives you the following options: I selected create a list of people without a Find A Grave Memorial and I got a nice LONG list of people.  From this list, I have been able to find more ancestors to research and add to my database. How I Use Evernote for My Genealogy.

Hopefully this will clear up any questions you may have. How I use Evernote for my genealogy. I use Evernote to store everything including my genealogy research. You want to use Evernote in a way that makes sense to you.  Tags, notebooks, no tags or no notebooks; do whatever works the best for you. Notebooks  (the  blue  box) Notebooks are sorted alphabetically so if there are notebooks you want at the top of your list you can use ! or @ or ~ in front of your notebook title.  In my image, for example, I have my INBOX notebook with an ! in front to keep this notebook at the top of the list.  I use a ~ to keep my GENEALOGY notebook stacks together. ...

Elizabeth Jane Savage Thomas

Elizabeth Jane Savage is my husband's 3rd great grandmother.  She was born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania on 1 May 1821 to Henry and Elizabeth (Frantz) Savage.   Elizabeth married Joseph Thomas (#2 of 52) on 19 June 1854 and they had the following children: Daniel W. Thomas John W. Thomas Joshua Eugene Thomas Parvin Oscar Thomas Ella G. Thomas William James Thomas Anna E. Thomas When Joseph was killed in April of 1865 in the Civil War Elizabeth continued to take care of their children.  She did not remarry.  She remained in Fishing Creek Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania where I found them in the 1860 Census.  From the List of Pensioners I found that in 1883 Elizabeth was getting $8.00 a month to care for her family.  Elizabeth died in April of 1890 and she is buried in Dodson Cemetery in Huntington Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania with other members of her husbands family.
